When the Ender Dragon was first defeated in Season 4, no Dragon Egg was ever found. Instead, four candles appeared where the Dragon Egg should have been, along with a book containing a cryptic message:

And when the Ender Dragon is respawned and killed with Looting III, it drops an Initiation Candle:
